Hawaii Youth Opportunities Initiative
In 2009, EPIC ‘Ohana, Inc. was chosen to be the Lead Agency for the national
Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative (“Initiative”) in Hawaii. The
mission of the Initiative is to ensure successful transitions into adulthood
for foster youth. The Hawaii Youth Opportunities Initiative (“HYOI”) started in
January 2010 and is the local site for the Initiative.
The HYOI helps youth leaving foster care become successful
adults in their communities. We work with youth and community partners to
provide access to education, employment, health care, housing, family
relationships and community connections.
The HYOI works with the HI H.O.P.E.S. (Hawaii Helping Our
People Envision Success) Youth Leadership Board and the Community Partnership
Hui (“CP Hui”) on both Oahu and East Hawaii. The HI H.O.P.E.S. Board is
made up of current and former foster youth between the ages of 14-24.
They provide the “youth voice” for the HYOI and help to identify the needs of
and advocate on behalf of transition-aged foster youth. The CP Hui is comprised
of members from both the public and private sector who are able to make policy
changes and provide opportunities for transitioning foster youth.
The
HYOI is funded by the Victoria S. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation, the Hawaii
Community Foundation, the Atherton Foundation and the McInerny
Foundation. We are proud to work closely with the Department of Human
Services-Child Welfare Services, the Family Court and community partners such
as Bank of Hawaii.
